The owner of this cherished childhood home had always dreamt of transforming its architectural style. With a deep appreciation for Cape Cod aesthetics, she envisioned a coastal-inspired haven in the heart of La Jolla. However, in this coastal area, we faced stringent regulations that required us to preserve over 50% of the existing structure to gain waver from the coastal review board.
Undeterred, we embarked on a journey to reimagine the home's architecture. I incorporated Cape Cod elements, infusing the property with a timeless coastal charm.
This project was a testament to the owner's dedication to preserving the essence of her childhood home while infusing it with the coastal elegance she had always admired. The result is a beautiful fusion of tradition and aspiration, a home that now stands as a testament to both the past and the future.
Transforming an old Spanish house into a modern Cape Cod style residence involves a complete overhaul of architectural elements. The distinctive features of a Cape Cod style home include:
Exterior Siding: Replace the stucco or terracotta exterior with traditional Cape Cod siding materials such as clapboard, shingles, or weathered wood.
Color Scheme: Choose a muted color palette for the siding, typically whites, grays, or pastel shades, to achieve the classic Cape Cod look.
Roof: Replace or reconfigure the roof to incorporate a steeply pitched gable roof with dormer windows. Dark shingles or cedar shakes are commonly used.
double-hung windows with white frames and shutters to enhance the timeless aesthetic.
Front Porch: front porch or expand the existing one, typically adorned with white columns and railings.
